Memories of My Mother's Garden

Memories fade over time, this is true. However, in my mind's eye I will always remember my mother and her garden. She took great joy in working in her garden, knowing the Latin names for each plant, sharing flowers and plants with others, and making a haven for birds in her garden.

As a child my sister and I would spend hours playing amongst the flower beds strewn with stepping stones. Some of my favorite memories include picking flowers, taking wildflower walks, or having the snapdragons talk. Though I could not put all my favorite flowers in one wool felt creation, I still managed to capture a few of the precious memories of her garden. Indeed, one of her granddaughters lovingly recalled her garden when viewing "Countryside Garden".

In the first panel I depict the bird bath from the backyard that would attract many birds. Pansies and Johnny jump ups abounded.

The second panel contains many of my mother’s favorites: delphinium, black-eyed Susan, daisies, pinks and nasturtiums. We discovered as children that a drop of early morning dew could be rolled around in the nasturtium leaves.

"Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be" was inscribed on the sundial. Throughout the garden were many types of hostas, and growing throughout the lawn were beautiful little purple violets. In addition, there was a large area of naturalized daffodils, jonquils and narcissus in a wide range of colors and styles. It is my hope that each stitcher will enjoy their own walk through this, my memory garden.
